Capturing Your Day Using the Magic of Film Photography: A Conversation with Analog Modern

Welcome to another episode of Cut the Cake, where we dive deep into the world of photography and explore the art of capturing moments. In this episode, we are thrilled to have Nathan from Analog Modern as our guest. Nathan is a talented photographer who specializes in film photography, bringing a unique and authentic touch to his work.

Analog Modern is more than just a photography business; it is a philosophy that embraces the beauty of film photography. Nathan, the mastermind behind Analog Modern, explains his approach:

"My photographs are honest and aim to capture the true feeling of the day rather than just pretty pictures."

Nathan's dedication to authenticity sets him apart from other photographers. He believes that true emotions and genuine moments are what make a photograph truly special. Let's explore how Nathan achieves this through his unique process.

The Magic of Film Photography

Film photography has a certain allure that digital photography often fails to capture. Nathan explains the magic behind film:

"Film has a certain quality to it that digital just can't replicate. It has a depth and richness that brings the images to life."

The process of shooting on film requires a different level of intentionality and mindfulness. Nathan elaborates:

"With film, you have to be more deliberate with your shots. You can't just take hundreds of photos and hope for the best. Each frame is precious, and you have to make it count."

This intentional approach forces Nathan to slow down and truly immerse himself in the moment. It allows him to focus on capturing the essence of the day rather than getting caught up in the technicalities.

Embracing Imperfections

One of the unique aspects of film photography is the element of unpredictability. Nathan embraces the imperfections that come with shooting on film:

"I love the imperfections that film brings. The light leaks, the grain, the unexpected surprises – they all add character to the images."

These imperfections add a sense of authenticity and nostalgia to the photographs. They remind us that life is not always perfect, and that's what makes it beautiful.

The Scanning Process and Editing

While Nathan's photographs are primarily shot on film, they are eventually converted into digital images through a scanning process. This raises the question of whether he makes extensive edits to the images. Nathan sheds light on his approach:

"I try to keep the natural shot intact as much as possible. I want the images to reflect the true essence of the moment."

Nathan believes in minimal editing, allowing the raw beauty of the film to shine through. He explains:

"Film already has a unique quality to it, and I don't want to alter that too much. I want the images to feel authentic and true to the moment they were captured."

By preserving the integrity of the film, Nathan ensures that his photographs retain their timeless charm.

The Style of Analog Modern

Describing his style as a photographer, Nathan emphasizes the importance of capturing genuine emotions:

"I strive to capture the true essence of the day – the laughter, the tears, the joy, and the love. I want my photographs to evoke emotions and transport people back to that moment."

Nathan's style is characterized by its candidness and authenticity. He believes that the true beauty lies in the unposed, unfiltered moments that often go unnoticed.

The Importance of Being Chilled

One of the things that sets Analog Modern apart is Nathan's laid-back and relaxed approach. He believes that being present in the moment is crucial to capturing genuine emotions:

"I want my clients to feel comfortable and at ease. When people are relaxed, their true selves shine through, and that's when the magic happens."

Nathan's ability to create a relaxed atmosphere allows his clients to let their guard down and be themselves. This results in photographs that truly reflect their personalities and the emotions of the day.

Capturing the True Feeling of the Day

Nathan's philosophy of capturing the true feeling of the day goes beyond just taking pretty pictures. He explains:

"I want my photographs to tell a story. I want them to transport people back to that moment and make them feel the emotions all over again."

Nathan's dedication to authenticity and his ability to capture genuine moments make his photographs come alive. He goes beyond the surface and dives deep into the heart of each event, creating a visual narrative that resonates with his clients.

Implications and Potential Impact

The approach taken by Analog Modern has the potential to revolutionize the world of photography. In an age where digital images dominate, Nathan's dedication to film photography brings a refreshing change. By embracing imperfections and focusing on genuine emotions, he reminds us of the beauty in the imperfect and the fleeting.

Nathan's philosophy also challenges the notion that photographs need to be perfectly posed and edited to be considered beautiful. He proves that true beauty lies in the raw and unfiltered moments that often go unnoticed.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

Analog Modern and Nathan's unique approach to photography have the power to inspire a new generation of photographers. By embracing film photography and focusing on authenticity, Nathan reminds us of the importance of being present in the moment and capturing genuine emotions.

About Analog Modern

Nathan Kaso is the brains behind Analog Modern and a passionate and seasoned photographer. He first found love in documenting the moments of his family life and from here, it became his profession. He started shooting on 35mm film because he wanted the photos of his kids to have the same nostalgic feel as the images from my own childhood.

Photographing weddings very much feels like an extension of his own family photography. While it wasn't the reason he began shooting weddings, his approach has stayed the same. Nathan aims to capture images that transport you back into the moment they were taken, and fill you with the feelings you had at that exact point in time.

For Nathan, the best images aren't the prettiest ones, or those that are technically correct, it's the photos where you can see a bit of someone's personality, and can be reminded of who they really  are, even if it's only in the smallest way.
